Bike Trails and Rentals
20 Miles of Trails
Jekyll Island has more than 20 miles of bicycle trails, many of them
recently resurfaced. A long stretch runs along the beach, where a rider can take
advantage of the cool breezes in the summer. Others will opt for pedaling
through the Historic District to view the Cottages of the Millionaires while
riding beneath majestic live oaks. The more adventurous will head up the
Riverview side of the island for its spectacular marsh views and a visit to the
historic Horton House. New trails zig zag through the forests on the island's
south end.
A real advantage of Jekyll's bicycle trails is that they are safe, ideal for
families with children. It is a common occurrence to see a four or five year old
pedaling in front of his parents down one of the many paths.
Bike Rental
Without a bike, using a trail is not as much fun. Often visitors to the
island bring bikes with them. All types of bikes are available for rent. You can
have the normal two wheel variety, or why not try a three-weelers sporting a
semi-recumbent position or load up the whole family on a four-weel carriages
with a surrey fringe on top. Rental prices vary, but many are availble for a
little as $8 for a half day, but you can pay up to $22 an hour for one of those
surreys. Whatever the price you will get some very special views of the island
from the bike trails.
Bikes can be rented at the mini-golf course, at most hotels, at Maxwell's in
the shopping center or in the big tent near the Day's Inn Motel.
