Garden Club
Dedicated to Island Beautification
The purposes of the
Garden Club are to promote the love of gardening, to know and protect our native
trees, wild flowers and birds, and to carry out such projects toward civic
beautification as may be approved by the Jekyll Island Authority. The Club has a
monthly meeting with programs featuring horticultural tips or speakers of local
interest. Meetings may be a luncheon or a field trip.
Bazaar
What for years has been a Holiday event in November has been moved to January. The Garden Club uses a portion of the
Convention Center for a huge flea market, with booths on books, furniture, white elephant items, plants, baked goods, crafts and much more.
Decoration of Historic Houses
Another big annual project is decorating the old millionaires' cottages in
the Historic District. Wreaths, garlands and swags are put together from
greenery cut on the island. A tram ride through the district, with stops to
visit some of the homes, follows. The evening concludes with a dinner for the
volunteers.
Beautification Projects and Grants
Funds raised by the Garden Club have supported many plantings of trees and
wild flowers on the Island and helped build bike paths. Many of the benches
along the beach and the water fountain at the mini golf course were gifts from
the Garden Club. In addition, the Club provides the Jekyll Island Authority with landscaping interns.
Meetings
The Garden Club meets the first Wednesday of each month, October through May.
Meetings normally are in the Beachside Hall of the Convention Center
