Friends of Historic Jekyll
Preserving our History
Founded in 1985, the
Friends are a not-for-profit organization established to assist in the
preservation and interpretation of Jekyll Island, its natural and historic
heritage. In its early years, members were heavily involved in "hands-on" work
in the Historic District. In recent years, the emphasis has switched to support,
primarily through funding of enhancement projects selected in conjunction with
the JIA Museum. Funds for these projects are generated through membership dues,
bequests and fundraising events. Current major fundraisers are an annual formal
"Dinner at the Club" and a charity auction. Friends also raise funds and provide
services for Faith Chapel.
The Fiore Collection
Friends owns and maintains an exhibit of more than 100 sculptures that were
crafted by former island resident Rosario (Russell) Fiore. The sculptures are on
the second floor of Mistletoe Cottage in the Historic District. The exhibit is
open to the public from 2 to 4 pm on Saturdays or Sundays or by special
arrangement. FOHJ provides volunteers to sit at Mistletoe during these hours to
make the exhibit available for viewing by the public.
